PRESS RELEASE
2004 GE Judo Championships - Success for the "Big Dogs"
Thanks to all who participated and made our event so special. Thanks to the press for showing such an interest in covering our event.
As the tournament t-shirt blared, "If You Can't Hang with the Big Dogs... Stay Off the Mat", all the top judo clubs from Florida and
south Georgia converged at Gym Etc. in Lakeland this past Saturday, November 13 for the first GE Judo Championships. "This event far
exceeded our expectations" stated co-director Brian Germain. "We had 265 total entries which made it one of the largest judo tournaments
the state of Florida has had in recent years".
The event was held at Gym Etc., owned and managed by co-director Phil Wortman. "We were very excited to have the opportunity to show the
Florida judo community how we could run a judo tournament", states Wortman. "Given that it was our first one, and based on the feedback
we have received, we are very please on how it turned out".
"All the big dogs showed up too" Germain said. "Ki-Itsu-Sai from Ft. Lauderdale has the premier judo program in the entire United States
and they showed their power on the mats by winning the team title. I am always amazed at how well they develop their athletes and how tough
they compete on the mat. El Mambi Judo Club from Tampa is another "Big Dog" too and they took a team second. They have really developed in
the past couple years and are starting to rival Ki-Itsu-Sai in some divisions".
GE Judo took a hard earned third place in the team standings. "I was very proud of our kids" states Germain. "For a few of them this was
their first tournament and that can make many kids very nervous but they handled the pressure great. Our advanced kids continue to develop
as well. Many of them are competing very tough with the players from Ki-Itsu-Sai and El Mambi. Its great to have clubs like that in the state.
Our kids are always ensured great competition whenever we go to an event".
The tournament had novice divisions as well. "Very often tournaments don't have novice divisions" states Germain. "It can be discouraging to a
kid if they have to fight someone over their head. I think that is one reason we got the numbers we did. Just over half the competitors were
entered in the novice groups. It was great that we were able to provide that competitive opporturnity for the beginners and help further the
development of grassroots judo in Florida".
So where does GE Judo go from here? "I would like to take a little rest" states Germain. "Running an event like this for the first time was
very stressful but it is statisfying that it went reasonably well. The team has earned a little break for the holidays but not to much of one.
The state championships are held in January, the Sr. Nationals in April, and then the Sunshine State Games and Jr. Nationals are next summer.
Judo is a year around sport so you can only plan little breaks. If you want to catch the "Big Dogs" you can't rest to long".
