Nage-no-Kata (Form of Throwing)Here are some of my personal observations of Nage-no-Kata after judging Kata competitions lately: 1) Tori should start on the left as facing the Judges. Recently, some people have accidently had tori on the wrong side 2) Uke attacks must be real/genuine (on Target and with force) otherwise the techniques can't be effective 3) On the pushing attckes by Uke, both Uke and Tori should use Tsugi Ashi (following foot). The feet must NOT pass each other or come even with each other. 4) Uke must NOT jump. Tori must throw Uke. It is very obvious to the judges when Uke jumps. 5) All throws except for Uki Goshi are done right side first then left side. On Uke Goshi, Uke attacks right side but tori does a hirdari (left) Uki Goshi. This Uki Goshi is done moving. The 2nd side is started stationary. 6) Tomoe Nage on both sides and the right side Ura Nage should be done at a quicker pace then the rest of the Nage-no-Kata. 7) When getting up from the ground don't lay your hand on the ground. Uke's also do NOT cross legs when roll up to standing. 8) Whenever possible don't turn your back to the judges. 9) All the throws should end generally in the center of the mat area. 10) Practice a lot as a team and be crisp as a team. It shows which teams have been practicing and which have not. I hope that this helps in your Nage-no-Kata. |
