Kime-no-Kata (Forms of Decision) Part 2

Written by: David J. Ellis, 6-time Florida State Champion in Kime-no-Kata

[NOTE: I started off writing this and after looking at the length, I decided to divide it up in 2 parts. This is the 2nd part. See 1st part in the Archive]

Between Idori (Kneeling) and Tachiai:
  • Both Tori and Uke return to kneeling position in the same position as the beginning of Yoko Tsuki. Uke places dagger back inside gi jacket with blade up. Uke stands and walks back to about 4 feet in front of Tori, faces Tori and kneels down. Uke pauses for a few seconds then stands and go back to put dagger next to the sword, in it’s original position. After the dagger is on the mat, both Uke and Tori can fix their gis. As Uke stands Tori stands at the same time. Uke turns and facing Tori walk to about 15 inches from Tori.

Tachiai (Standing)
9. Ryote dori (Two hand grab/hold)
  • Uke steps forward with right foot, kiais, and grabs both Tori’s hands with both hands.
  • Tori pulls hands backward breaking Uke’s balance. When pulling hand backward, go from fist to open hand. Tori kicks toward Uke’s groin with the ball of the right foot and kiais. Tori brings foot back down immediately and takes hold of Uke’s left wrist from underneath with right hand and raises Uke’s left arm. At the same time, Tori breaks his/her left hand free, turns and steps to his/her left front diagonal with tsugiashi and pulls Uke’s left arm straight in front. Tori places his/her left hand on Uke’s left wrist trapping Uke’s left arm in his/her armpit applying Waki-Gatame.
  • Uke taps Tori’s thigh twice.
  • Tori and Uke then return to facing each other about 3 feet apart.

10. Sode Tori (Sleeve grab)
  • Uke walks to Tori’s right side standing to Tori’s left rear corner about a half step behind Tori. Uke faces the same direction as Tori. Uke grabs the middle of Tori’s left sleeve, just above the elbow, with the left hand. Then transfers it to the right hand by grabbing a handful of Tori’s gi and twisting so Uke’s knuckles pushes against Tori’s elbow. Uke then pushes Tori’s left arm to force Tori to walk forward. Both Uke and Tori should step right foot, then left foot, and right foot again.
  • On the third step, Tori steps with his/her right foot to his/her right front corner to break Uke’s balance. Tori kicks toward Uke’s right knee with the side of his/her left foot and kiais. Uke still holds onto Tori’s sleeve. Tori then pivots 180 degrees to his/her left after placing his/her foot back down immediately after the kick. Tori takes the inside middle of Uke’s right sleeve with the left hand and Uke’s lapel with the right hand. Then throws Uke with a right O soto gari.
  • Uke stands and walks back to face Tori at a distance about 6 feet.

11. Tsukkake (Punch to face)
  • Uke steps forward with the left foot, raises the left fist to eye level and holds the right fist at stomach level ready to punch with the left hand. Uke lunges forward with right foot and attempts to punch Tori between the eyes with right hand, palm up, while kiaiing.
  • Quickly Tori turns right 90 degrees to avoid the punch. At the same time, Tori catches Uke’s right forearm with the right hand and pulls it forward and down to break Uke’s balance. As Uke tries to regain balance, Tori steps behind Uke with right foot first then left foot. At the same time moving right arm around Uke’s throat and pulling back. Tori clasps hands over Uke’s left shoulder and draws left back into a slight jigo-tai position and applies Hadaka-Jime.
  • After trying to escape by pulling Tori’s arm down with both hands, Uke taps the mat twice with the foot.
  • Tori and Uke return to facing each other at approximately 40 inches apart.

12. Tsuki Age (Uppercut)
  • Uke steps forward with right foot, kiais, and tries to uppercut Tori’s chin.
  • Tori leans back to avoid the uppercut and then grasps Uke’s right wrist with both hands (right above left) pulling it upward. Tori turns body to the right drawing his/her right foot to his/her right front diagonal. This off-balances Uke. Tori applies Waki-gatame to Uke’s right elbow. Remember Uke’s pinky finger should be up.
  • Uke taps Tori’s thigh twice.

At the same time, Tori punches toward Uke’s solar plexus with right fist, palm up, and kiais. Tori then place left foot in front of Uke’s left foot, wraps left arm around Uke, brings right foot back, grasps Uke’s left sleeve with right and throws Uke with left Uki-goshi.

At the same time, Tori places right arm under Uke’s right arm and placing right hand on Uke’s left chest. Tori pushes Uke backward while grabbing Uke’s left lapel with right hand. Tori moves right foot behind Uke’s feet then left foot. While stepping, Tori reaches over Uke’s left shoulder and around Uke’s neck with left hand grabbing high on Uke’s lapel. Tori places forehead against the back of Uke’s head and pushes forward. Tori then pulls Uke back by stepping back with left foot and lowering hips, thus applying Okuri Eri-Jime.
  • After trying to escape by pulling Tori’s left elbow down with both hands, Uke taps the mat twice with the foot.
  • Tori and Uke return to facing each other at approximately 40 inches apart.

15. Ke Age (Groin Kick)
  • Uke steps forward a small step with left foot, tries to kick Tori in the groin with the ball of right foot and kiais.
  • Quickly Tori turns right 90 degrees while drawing his/her right foot back. At the same time, Tori grabs Uke’s right foot with left hand at the ankle. Tori then places right hand on Uke’s right ankle and pulls Uke’s leg to Tori’s left. Tori then twists hips to the left, kicks toward Uke’s groin with the ball of his/her right foot, and kiais. Tori then lets go of Uke’s leg.

16. Ushiro Dori (Hold from Behind)

After a few steps, Uke takes two quick steps with left foot and right foot forward. The right foot on the outside of Tori’s right side and holds Tori around the upper arms.
  • Tori escapes by raising both arms with elbows out and grabs Uke’s right upper sleeve with both hands. Then Tori throws Uke with right Seoi Nage. At the exact moment Uke lands, Tori should strike Uke between the eyes with the knife edge of his/her right hand while placing right knee on the mat with live toes and kiais.
  • Tori and Uke return to facing each other at approximately 40 inches apart. Uke then turns and retrieves the dagger picking it up in the same way described in Idori Tsukkomi. Uke then stands and walks back to approximately 40 inches from Tori.

17. Tsukkomi (Dagger Thrust to Stomach)
  • Uke steadies the dagger with left hand while grabbing with right hand. Uke draws the dagger out with the blade facing upward, pulling back the right elbow preparing to attack Tori. Uke steps forward with left foot and tries to stab Tori in the solar plexus while kiaing.
  • Quickly Tori turns right 90 degrees. At the same time, Tori catches Uke’s right elbow with left hand and draws Uke forward, strikes Uke between the eyes with right fist palm up and kiais. Tori takes Uke’s right wrist, pulls it to right hip and holds the wrist against the right thigh while pulling forward to Tori’s right front corner. (The right hand is close to Uke’s wrist and the left is on Uke’s forearm) Then Tori steps back on the right foot while turing to the right then steps with the left foot to the front of Uke’s right. Tori takes a Tsugi Ashi to the right back diagonal with the right foot while pulling Uke along.Tori traps Uke’s right arm in the left armpit while taking the Tsugi Ashi steps. When Uke’s balance is broken Tori applies the Waki-Gatame to Uke’s right elbow. Tori should be in a slight defensive posture.
  • Uke taps Tori’s thigh twice.
  • Tori and Uke return to facing each other at approximately 40 inches apart. Uke then returns to where the sword is laying. Uke picks up the sword by using both hands, crossing right over left. The right hand is just below the sword guard. Uke then places the sword vertical with the tip on the mat, then slides left hand down to the end. Then brings the sword to the belt and inserts into the left side of the belt using the fingers to make space in the belt and pushing the sword down into the belt with the blade facing upward. Then Uke returns to stand approximately 3 feet in front of Tori facing Tori.

Uke then steps forward with left foot while raising the sword above his/her head. Uke attacks Tori when the timing feels correct by taking a big step forward with right foot, trying to slash Tori on the top of the head. At the same time, Uke kiais.
